He paddled 1,200 miles down the Mississippi to release an album. We figured the least we could do was invite him into our backyard.

"Richly realised songs with deft lyrics and considered sensibility." — Irish Times
Paul Spring grew up in rural Minnesota, spent his teenage years in Spiddal, Co. Galway absorbing Irish traditional music, and eventually landed in Queens, New York. He is a great-grandson of poet Joyce Kilmer and impressionist painter Frederick Frieseke — which tells you something about how he moves through the world. His music ranges from Bach transcriptions on a 12-string to folk songs that cite Toni Braxton as a production influence, and it all somehow makes sense when you hear it.
His 2022 album Thunderhead was called a "hidden pop gem" by the Irish Times. His 2024 record Kind of Heaven was tracked live over two days with drummer Jon Nellen (Big Thief, Nick Hakim). His 2025 album Dumb and Free — recorded at a monthly residency — features songs written from the perspective of different people from his hometown. He is, in the best possible way, impossible to categorize.
